How do the ANZIAs reflect auDA’s stakeholder engagement commitment?

Posted by Helen Hollins on 2 June 2016

The Australia & New Zealand Internet Awards (ANZIAs) are an important part of auDA’s broader commitment to community programs.

Our community programs come out of our commitment to the multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance, which auDA is an active participant of here in Australia, and internationally through ICANN and the global IGF.  This is the reason behind our efforts to support, partner and engage with the many and varied organisations, businesses and individuals that have an interest or stake in the .au domain name space. These are our stakeholders.

Domestically, we try to engage with a broad base of stakeholders with differing interests and needs and there is no better opportunity for us to do that than through the ANZIAs, our annual awards program (co-created with InternetNZ). This year’s deadline will close on 10 June, so time is of the essence for those people, companies, organisations and community groups whose efforts and achievements the awards were created to celebrate. This year, as previously outlined in the launch press release here, we wanted to be sure we reflected the dynamic sector we operate within and so we carefully reviewed the categories and the communications strategy for the awards program. We have added a Tech Start Up award (supported by Fishburners), a Security award, supported by the .au 2LD registry operator AusRegistry, and redefined the Digital and Diversity award for the not-for-profit (NFP) sector (amongst other categories available to NFPs). We have also made all winners eligible for prize money, not just charities.

Launching this year’s ANZIAs at the Above All Human conference, we spoke directly to the largest group of start-ups assembled at an event in Australia in years. This week we were at the Our Community Group – Communities in Control Conference 2016 (CIC) to promote the awards.

Fittingly, this event is the most widely attended annual NFP conference in Australia. People come from all over the country to hear and learn, to take back new understanding to their own communities – over 800 people, in fact.

auDA was represented on stage, with a session led by Acting CEO Jo Lim and included Natalie Isaacs – Founder 1millionwomen, Krystal Barter – Founder PinkHope and Georgie Harman – CEO BeyondBlue. We also ran an ANZIA promotional stand in the meeting hall, enthusiastically manned by auDA staff. We were able to share some important insights with the audience about their stakeholder engagement, specifically around the value of video content in optimising website traffic.

  • Between 10-15% of websites in the NFP, education and government sectors (org.au, asn.au, edu.au and gov.au) hold video content. That’s a higher proportion than all com.au and net.au websites
  • 46% of users take some sort of action after viewing an ad, according to Online publishers association
  • According to Forbes, 59% of executives would rather watch video than read text
  • Enjoyment of video ads increase purchase intent by 97% and brand association by 139% according to Unruly
  • According to Forrester Research it is 50x easier to achieve a page one ranking on Google with a video
  • According to Implix, an introductory email that includes a video receives an increase click-through rate by 96%
  • Online video now accounts for 50 percent of all mobile traffic and up to 69 percent of traffic on certain networks. (Bytemobile Mobile Analytics Report)
  • More than 1 billion unique users visit YouTube each month, spending more than 4 billion hours watching videos (YouTube)
  • The average user spends 88% more time on a website with video. (Source: Mist Media)
  • Landing pages with video have up to 800% more conversion than the same page without a video. So if you’re spending a lot of time finessing that web copy, you may have better luck with a video. (Source: Orion21)

Being able to make this level of information available to our NFP stakeholders is an important part of what we’re here for. Along with the ANZIA’s themselves, it engages in the most direct and relevant way with some of our key stakeholders, and helps to promote the Internet community as a whole.

And since a blog post which incorporates video, attracts three times as many inbound links as blog posts without video - (Source: SEOmoz) - here is a video (on the ANZIA front page) of just some of the people we met, chatted with and engaged at Communities in Control 2016 here.
