auDA addresses spam and privacy concerns, extends domain name expiry period to 30 days

auDA will implement an Image Verification Check (IVC) on its web-based WHOIS service. This keeps Australia in line with international best practice according to the CEO of auDA, Chris Disspain.

At the same time auDA has announced an extension of the domain name expiry period from 14 to 30 days.

Mr Disspain said the IVC implementation was designed to address the legitimate privacy concerns of Australian Internet users and reduce the number of unsolicited email messages reaching Australians’ email inboxes.

“IVC will work by preventing or hindering unauthorised access to the WHOIS database by automated data mining programs or scripts,” he said.

“Spam continues to be a big problem and it is also understandable that Australian Internet users are concerned about protecting their privacy online.

“Part of our role is to ensure the concerns of Australian Internet users are properly addressed, which is why we’ve moved forward with the IVC initiative.”

Mr Disspain said auDA’s decision to extend the domain name expiry period from 14 to 30 days was designed to give Australian domain name registrants greater protection.

“If a registrant fails to renew their domain name before the expiry date, they will now have more time to organise the renewal before losing their domain name,” he said.

The changes to WHOIS and the domain name expiry period will come into effect on 19 November 2006.
