In May 2006 auDA removed the restriction on domain names that match existing TLDs (eg. com.com.au or uk.net.au).
It has recently come to auDA's attention that some registrants of TLD domain names are using wildcard resource records, causing some users of the DNS to get different results to the same query.
auDA notes that the use of wildcard resource records is widely regarded within the internet technology community as detrimental to the operational stability of the DNS. ICANN's Security and Stability Advisory Committee recently released a report "Why Top Level Domains Should Not Use Wildcard Resource Records".
At this year's AGM, auDA announced plans to establish a Security and Stability Advisory Commitee for the .au domain. The practice of using wildcard resource records will be referred to the Committee for further examination and to refine auDA's policy in this area.
In the meantime, registrants who use wildcard resource records should be aware that auDA will take action to protect the operational stability and utility of the .au DNS.
