The Board and Staff of .au Domain Administration (auDA) share the internet community’s shock and sadness at the news of Peter Tonoli’s sudden death, and express our deepest condolences to Peter’s family and many friends.

Peter was a valued contributor to the work of auDA, particularly in recent years as Chair of auDA’s General Advisory Standing Committee, and as a member of the Consultation Model Working Group tasked with supporting auDA’s transformation to meet the Government’s new terms of endorsement. Most recently, Peter was a presenter and participant at the Asia Pacific Top Level Domain association’s 77th member meeting in Melbourne, hosted by auDA and attended by 130 delegates from across the region.

From the early beginnings of the internet in Australia, Peter was involved in championing better digital rights and community infrastructure, and was an instrumental part of a myriad of digital and internet associations over the decades since. Most recently he was Vice Chair of Electronic Frontiers Australia, Director at Internet Australia, IT Leader at Blueprint for Free Speech, and Technical Committee Member of the Australian Privacy Foundation.

Peter’s funeral will be at 10.00am on Tuesday 24 March at the Immaculate Church in Hawthorn, Victoria.

In lieu of flowers, Peter’s family have asked for donations to be made to Electronic Frontiers Australia to enable his work and passion to continue.
