Your opportunity to help shape the future of .au

Posted by on 26 November 2010

The .au Domain Administration (auDA) is currently seeking public comment on a range of policies relating to the management and operation of the Internet in Australia.

Given it is used by millions of businesses, organisations and individuals every day, it is critically important that all Australians have the opportunity to help shape the future of our “.au” Internet domain.

auDA oversees the operation of “.au” on behalf of the Australian community, under a non-profit, industry self-regulatory model. Policies for .au are created and reviewed in a highly consultative process to which all Australians are invited to contribute.

In August, the auDA Board appointed the “2010 Names Policy Panel” to review the policy framework for .au names and provide recommendations about what changes, if any, should be made. The Panel by is made up of volunteers from across the Australian community, who bring together a broad range of legal, business, technical and public policy experience.

The Panel will undertake at least two rounds of public consultation, to ensure that its recommendations are properly canvassed with, and informed by, key stakeholders and the general community.

As part of this consultative process, the Panel today released a discussion paper, based upon deliberations to date.

Some of the key questions raised in the paper include:

  • Should the restriction on registrants being Australian remain in place?
  • Should the fixed 2 year domain name licence period be changed?
  • Should single character domain names (a-z, 0-9) be introduced?

The Panel welcomes comments and suggestions on the specific questions raised, as well as any other relevant issues.

Comments can be submitted via email, fax, or through an online survey.

The closing date for submissions is 21 January 2011.
